MORE DAMN KITTIES dev log
I was working on MORE DAMN KITTIES around the same time I was conceptualizing NOUN NOUN SHOWDOWN, which is why they both released the same day. However, the inspiration comes from the most unusual places.
I wanted to make discrete games -- games that you could play at a restaurant, out with friends at a bar, in class at school, etc. -- which sent me down a rabbit hole of ideas of how I could do that. This was when I remembered that I had some solo roleplaying games on my phone that I downloaded from Itch. One of those games was Fathom by Scott Malthouse. In the game, you are "a submariner from the City of Ember" exploring the depths of the Sargasso Sea. In the game, you need a deck of playing cards, a d12 dice, and pen and paper to write about your trials and tribulations in your journey.
I tried the game, and while interesting, I was quickly bored by the content. I don't think it was the game, but the story itself. I just was not invested in it, and quickly shelved it. However, the concept of the size of the game and how accessible it was for solo players intrigued me.
I set out on my own journey to find my own game.
Anyone remember the videogame MDK?
This game from Shiny Entertainment is a hard as nails game, but one of those unique games that stuck in my mind. The initials MDK had several meanings over the years, but one of the developers of the game finally admitted in a news article that the game stood for "Murder Death Kill." I wanted a game that used the same initials, but for an entirely satirical reason. I mean, I am known by some of my close friends online as "Mock Ravage," which is a parody of the old pulp hero Doc Savage. So, I began to brainstorm what my game using MDK would stand for.
Inspiration really comes from the oddest places. Suddenly, a flood of images of kittens attacking humans ran through my mind, especially when the Internet is full of cat games and cat toys and cat videos. There's a new cat mech game, and you could finally tell that cats are truly becoming the bane of existence when the comments section was howling about not wanting anymore effing cat games. MORE DAMN KITTIES made sense, especially when we are fighting the kittens and the Queen Bee-esque Cat during the game.
Also, I am highly allergic to pet dander, especially from cats. I absolutely don't like being around cats, and really have a strong dislike of the feline species. Why not make a game where I can attack waves of them while trying to survive a bleak future overrun by the domestic animal I hate? Plus, there has yet to be a movie about mutated kittens attacking humans like rabid bloodthirsty zombies.
The colors of the Mock Ravage Games universe (at least at the moment) have had a strong influence on red and blue. I used to love 3-D glasses (the ones with the colored lenses) and have quite a collection of glasses I have collected over the years. It is funny how much red and blue I use in my life.
Even in Fortnite (when I used to play) I would choose the above customizable superhero skin, including matching back bling and more. I have cups and clothing that is red and blue. Most of the knick-knacks and odds-and-ends around the house have blue and red. It makes sense, at least right now, to stick with the theme and possibly look at a future bundle of all the games.
I dunno. Right now, it is only a bleak thought, and nothing that I have concrete in my mind.
Well, that's at least how we got to here. Please remember to check out the game (I put a fair amount of work into both) and let me know what you think of the game. I love hearing feedback as it will help with future versions and other games that I plan to release!
